February is National Children's Dental Health Month

The American Dental Association has designated February as National Children's Dental Health Month. It's unfortunate that many American children do not receive adequate dental care. Tooth decay is the most prevalent chronic childhood disease.* Many children do not visit the dentist regularly and over 51 million hours of school are lost each year due to dental problems.* It’s a great time of year to think about your children's oral health and schedule their regular dental visits for 2009.

Kids Health Tips

Children learn best by example! Have your child watch you brush and floss your teeth.  You will be showing them that you value oral care.  Below are some other oral health tips for children, small and large.

Babies

  • Bedtime bottles should only contain water. Milk, formula and juice all have sugars that work on the tooth surface overnight, inviting decay.
  • Don't neglect cavities in baby teeth, even though they are not permanent. Early cavities can cause pain and are a predictor of future oral health problems.

    Toddlers
  • Learn to spit. (Toothpaste, that is.) Children should brush with a pea-sized amount of toothpaste, and are ready for fluoride once they have learned how to spit after brushing.
  • Sippy cups - The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry now recommends that sippy cups contain only water unless it is mealtime. Just as with bottles, sipping sugary juices or milk over time prolongs exposure to the teeth.
  • Another caution: be sure that children never walk while sipping. If they take a tumble, the cup mouthpiece can injure the mouth or teeth.

Young Children

  • Supervise children when they brush their teeth and as they learn to floss.  Willingness aside, they might not have the manual dexterity to do a thorough job until they are 6 - 8 years old. Coaching goes a long way toward setting healthy habits that last a lifetime.

Older Kids and Teens

  • Mouthguards are recommended for many activities, not just contact
    sports. Ask your dental professional which kind is best, and make sure
    that the coaches reinforce mouthguard use during all practices and
    games.
  • Gum with xylitol. Sugarless gum is a good choice for those who chew
    because it increases saliva flow, helping to prevent cavities.  Gum
    sweetened with xylitol is preferred because this natural sweetener
    (from birch trees) also has antibacterial properties that help protect
    against decay.
  • Orthodontics - fluoride rinse provides extra protection for children
    with braces and helps clean hard-to-reach places.
  • Smoking - It's worth talking to teens about the oral health problems that smoking brings - bad breath, stained teeth, receding gums, mouth sores and even wrinkles from puffing.  Not very glamorous.
  • Smokeless tobacco also called "chew" "plugs" or "dip" is not a safe
    alternative to cigarettes.  It has more nicotine and can be a very
    addictive habit - nationwide, more than 1 in 7 high school boys use
    some form of smokeless tobacco (American Cancer Society). It can cause
    mouth sores, oral and pancreatic cancer, bone deterioration, tooth loss, staining and bad breath.
  • Oral Piercings - Tongue or lip piercings are magnets for infection, pain and swelling. "Mouth jewelry" can chip or crack teeth or damage fillings. And excessive drooling? Definitely uncool.
